Is Communication the KEY to...

Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with a colleague from my tenure as a broadcast professional. After connecting again through social media, we exchanged brief updates on our lives, discussing our families and current endeavors. During the conversation, my friend revealed that he was going through a difficult divorce after many years of marriage. As he expressed his internal conflict over the decision, I empathized, and with a heavy heart extended my support to him.

This conversation prompted me to reflect on the issue of divorce and its prevalence in modern society. During my time at college, I learned that in the United States, there was a projection that up to 40% of married couples would end up getting a divorce. Empathy is a crucial trait that enables us to connect with and understand other people's feelings and perspectives. It is the ability to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and experience their emotions. Empathy is what allows us to build strong relationships, understand their needs and desires, and provide support and comfort to them.

However, despite its benefits, empathy can also be an obstacle to your personal growth and wellbeing. This occurs when strong emotional boundaries are not in place. Low emotional awareness can lead you to adopt and internalize feelings that are not your own. 

This psychological tendency will keep you stuck in negative mental and emotional patterns (not your own). This happens more often than we realize. Especially in today's hustle and bustle lifestyle where many struggle with difficult emotions such as anxiety, fear, sadness, abandonment, and disconnect.
